You Show Up for Everyone. Do You Speak Up for Yourself?
By Coach Michelle Cumberbatch | Our Life’s Moments Academy
You can be dependable at work and still struggle to express what you need at home.
That disconnect is more common than people realize. When you are the “reliable one,” you learn how to keep things moving. But in close relationships, “I’m fine” can become a habit that can leave people unaware of what you actually need.
For some people, “I’m fine” is a way to avoid discomfort, conflict, or the fear of being seen as “too much.” (And for others, it really does mean they’re okay.)
Try this simple self-discovery exercise:
Think of one moment this week when you said “I’m fine” but needed something.
Practice naming it without blame: “I need ___ so I can feel ___.”
Example: “I need ten uninterrupted minutes to talk so I can feel heard.”
Reflection question:
What makes expressing a need difficult, even for someone who communicates confidently at work?
